New Westminster – On June 18 and 19, the New Westminster Police Department Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit collaborated with numerous other public safety partners to conduct a two-day targeted commercial vehicle enforcement event across several locations in New Westminster.
With the help of 30 officers from multiple partner agencies, including the Vancouver Police Department, Transit Police, Surrey Police Service, Burnaby RCMP, BC Highway Patrol, Langley Township Bylaw and the Ministry of Transportation and Transit’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE), enforcement took place at four key locations: Royal Avenue, 14th Street and Stewardson Way, 10th Avenue, and Boyd Street.
In total, 168 commercial vehicles were inspected. Of those, 56 were taken out of service due to significant mechanical or safety concerns. Seventeen vehicles were found to have insecure loads and two were overweight. Nine vehicles had to be towed, and two drivers were removed from the roadway for driving while prohibited. It should be noted that these numbers are not representative of the general condition of commercial vehicles in B.C. Only vehicles flagged by officers trained in identifying visible or potential safety defects were pulled over for inspection.
“This kind of enforcement is about protecting everyone who uses our roads,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “We’re grateful to work alongside CVSE officers who bring such specialized expertise to these checks. Their knowledge and training help ensure we’re identifying serious risks before they lead to a collision.”
The New Westminster Police Department thanks all partner agencies involved for helping make this enforcement initiative a success.
