“I welcome the New Westminster School Board’s recent decision to explore a renewed partnership with the New Westminster Police Department through the development of a School Safety Partnership Framework. This shift represents a meaningful opportunity to re-imagine how we collectively support student safety in collaboration with educators, administrators, and the broader school community.
The NWPD remains deeply committed to creating safe and inclusive environments for young people. We are eager to work alongside School District staff to collaborate on programming that prioritizes student well-being and reflects the evolving needs of our community. Together, our shared goal is to build trust, ensure transparency, and establish a framework that is responsive, supportive, and grounded in evidence-based practices.
It’s important to note that the two dedicated positions formerly assigned to the School Liaison Officer (SLO) program have been reallocated to other operational priorities following the program’s conclusion in 2021. While we are ready to fully engage in the development of a Memorandum of Understanding, the delivery of a dedicated service will be also dependent on available resources and continued dialogue with our funding partners.
We look forward to building on this momentum and appreciate the School Board’s willingness to re-engage in this vital aspect of community safety.”
