New Westminster – On July 8th, 2024, New Westminster Police Department responded to a report of a masked individual holding a firearm, who was attempting to gain entry to a home in the 900 block of 12th Street. The suspect was unable to gain access and fled the area.
New Westminster Police patrol members flooded the area and located the suspect, who was found to be in possession of a balaclava, rifle, and ammunition. Initial investigation determined that the suspect had arrived at the home by way of a stolen vehicle that was also recovered in the area. A second suspect believed to be associated to the incident was also arrested in close proximity to the vehicle. Both suspects were released with numerous conditions. Charges are being recommended relating to firearms offences, Breach of Probation, and Attempt Break and Enter with Intent to Commit an Indictable Offence.
The New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit took conduct of the investigation, and with the assistance of the Forensic Identification Unit, conducted an extensive examination of the scene and surrounding area. Detectives determined that a third suspect was involved, and on August 15th this suspect was arrested for Attempt Break and Enter with Intent to Commit an Indictable Offence, and Using a Firearm to Attempt an Indictable Offence.
“Anytime firearms are involved is very concerning, and our Detectives are working hard to gather evidence to support the investigation,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “This appears to be a targeted and isolated event, and we do not believe there is any increased risk to public safety”.
