Stolen debit card prompts pickpocketing warning

New Westminster – Police are reminding members of the public to be wary of theft after a resident had her stolen debit card used to make approximately $2,500 in withdrawals and purchases. The New Westminster Police Department continues to investigate this theft.

“Sadly, thieves are using a variety of tactics to prey upon some of our most vulnerable citizens,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver, “Distraction tactics are common, as well as thieves appearing to be helpful and offering to assist someone with bags or luggage.”

The New Westminster Police Department encourages all residents to keep money, cards, and other valuables close to you, and ensure your bag or purse is in front of your body. Be on guard if a stranger tries to point something out to you or distract you in any way. If you find that you’ve been a victim of theft please report it to the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
