New Westminster – As Chief Constable Dave Jansen begins his final week on the job, the New Westminster Police Department reflects on his service to the department and the community over the past three decades.

“Chief Jansen’s impact on the New Westminster Police Department has been immense,” said Deputy Chief Constable Paul Hyland. “He has set a high standard for our department, and his influence will be felt for years to come.”

Chief Jansen’s leadership has been defined by his unwavering dedication to public safety and his commitment to fostering strong community relationships. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of excellence and a dedicated senior leadership team ready to carry on his work.

“Chief Jansen’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping a forward-thinking and community-oriented police force,” stated New Westminster Police Board Chair Patrick Johnstone. “On behalf of the Police Board we extend our heartfelt gratitude and we wish him a fulfilling retirement.”

Chief Constable Jansen began his career with the department in 1990 and has served in various roles, including patrol, the Operational Support Unit, and the Major Crime Unit. He also led the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Jansen is an accredited Team Commander with Gold Commander certification from the College of Policing in the UK. He has earned several Senior Officer commendations and the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.

As Inspector, Jansen oversaw all three divisions of the New Westminster Police Department. In his four years as Chief Constable, he navigated changes such as decriminalization, the COVID-19 pandemic, and police reform, resulting in significant progress for the department. He also led the department in joining new integrated teams and establishing the Communications Operations Centre.

“All I ever wanted to do was to become a police officer and I was lucky enough that New Westminster gave me that chance, provided me an incredible career and entrusted me to lead this amazing organization,” stated Chief Constable Dave Jansen. “Whatever I may leave as a legacy will never compare to what the department and city has given me. Thanks New Westminster it has been an amazing career.”

The New Westminster Police Board is working on a transition to the next Chief Constable and will provide updates as they become available.
