Three Victims Pepper-Sprayed in Downtown New Westminster

New Westminster – On January 9th 2024 at approximately 8:30pm, New Westminster Police Department received a 9-1-1 call by someone who saw a youth suffering the effects of being pepper-sprayed. Officers found that in total, three different youth had been assaulted with pepper-spray. Officers determined a group of approximately ten youths are suspects in these assaults. According to the victims, the larger group of youths, who were wearing mostly black clothing, assaulted them inside Westminster Pier Park. All victims received minor injuries and were treated on scene by BC Emergency Health Services Paramedics and New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services.

“City parks are areas where members of the community should feel welcomed and safe,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “This behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will be taking all steps necessary to try to identify the suspects in this incident and hold them accountable.”

Police would like to remind residents and visitors that New Westminster parks are closed at dusk. Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this assault or has information about those involved. Investigators can be reached by calling the New Westminster Police Department at 604-525-5411.
