Join us at the Purple Light Nights vigil as we bring attention to the devastating impact that domestic violence has on families and children.
The Purple Lights Campaign aims to raise awareness and start a conversation about domestic violence in our community. The colour purple is recognized as the international colour symbolic of domestic violence.
The New Westminster Police Department will wear purple shoulder flashes for Prevention of Violence Against Women Week. We would like to encourage all residents to take a few minutes to affix a purple light to their home or workplace, to shine more light on the need to stop domestic violence.
A vigil will be on the steps of City Hall in New Westminster April 17 at 5:30pm. All are welcome.
The NWPD created the Domestic Violence Response Team in 1996 and pairs a detective with a community councillor to conduct specialized follow-up on cases of domestic violence in the city of New Westminster. These services are offered in partnership with Family Services of Greater Vancouver. The team serves survivors and their children who are in highest risk domestic violence situations. The Special Investigations Unit offers safety planning, coordination with community partners, heightened police awareness and response, and confidentiality with outreach workers.
