Update on investigation into fatal pedestrian motor vehicle incident

New Westminster – On February 19th New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit and members of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service began an investigation into a fatal pedestrian motor vehicle incident that occurred in the 100 block of East Columbia.

The road was closed for several hours as investigators collected evidence. The driver of the truck that struck and killed the pedestrian remained on scene and he has cooperated with investigators. Numerous people have provided dash-cam footage and witness statements. Investigators would like to extend their thanks to the public for this assistance. While this investigation is ongoing, at this time there is no evidence to support criminal charges against the driver. The work has now shifted from a criminal investigation to one where information is being gathered to provide to the City of New Westminster Engineering Services for consideration.

“This is a tragic event and we’d like to again extend our condolences to the family of the deceased,” stated Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “Incidents like this can be an upsetting thing to witness, and we’d like those people to know there is support available.”

The New Westminster Police Department would like to extend the support of the Victim Assistance Unit to those who witnessed this incident. Witnesses in need of support can call the Victim Assistance Unit at 604-529-2525 or email VAU@nwpolice.org.

There is no need for additional dash-cam footage to be sent to the Major Crime Unit.
