New Westminster Police Department marks 150th anniversary

New Westminster – The New Westminster Police Department is marking its 150th anniversary in 2023. The police department dates back to March 10th, 1873, when New Westminster’s city council authorized the hiring of its first Constable – making the New Westminster Police Department one of the oldest in Western Canada.

“A lot has changed since the New Westminster Police Department was founded 150 years ago,” stated Chief Constable Dave Jansen. “I’m proud of how the department is working with residents and public safety partners to address the challenges of today. Working together and learning from our past are the foundations of building a police department all can be proud of.”

Since the first Constable was hired, over six hundred men and women have served or are presently serving the citizens of New Westminster. This does not include the many civilian staff, reserve constables and volunteers who have dedicated their time to New Westminster.

“The New Westminster Police Department continues to evolve to best meet the needs of the citizens and visitors of New Westminster,” said Mayor Patrick Johnstone. “It is truly a modern department that is guided by the values of professionalism, diversity, and compassion.”

The police department will celebrate the 150th anniversary throughout the year with special programming, tributes and special anniversary challenge coin.
