Man charged following damage to business and assault of staff member

New Westminster – On July 26th at approximately 7:00pm, the New Westminster Police Department received a call from a witness advising there was an assault in progress inside a New Westminster business. According to witnesses, the man threatened staff inside and there were sounds of breaking glass. Officers attended the area and located an individual matching the suspect description standing in the 600 block of Columbia Street. The suspect was arrested and transported to the New Westminster Police Department cells.

“This behavior is not tolerated in our community,” stated Sergeant Justine Thom. “I want to remind all business owners and staff, if you ever feel unsafe, call 9-1-1 and we will be there.”

The following charges have been approved against 27 year old Gima Deng of Calgary Alberta:

  • 1 count of assault causing bodily harm contrary to Section 267 (b) of the Criminal Code of Canada;
  • 1 count of uttering threats contrary to Section 264.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada; and
  • 1 count of mischief contrary to Section 420 (4) of the Criminal Code of Canada;
  • 1 count of causing a disturbance contrary to Section 175(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
