Accused found guilty of Aggravated Assault in Columbia Street stabbing

New Westminster – On May 29th 2021 at approximately 2:00 am, New Westminster Police Department patrol members responded to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street outside of the Columbia Sky-Train station. When officers arrived they located a man suffering from life-threatening stab wounds to his stomach and back. Over the following days, detectives from the Major Crime Unit identified and safely arrested a suspect.

On May 25, 2022 Murid Ghulam was found guilty of:

One (1) count of Aggravated Assault, contrary to Section 268(1) of the Criminal Code.

“From the life-saving measures performed by the responding patrol officers to the detailed investigation completed by our Major Crime Unit, we’re proud of the work done on this case,” stated Sergeant Sanjay Kumar. “We are committed to working with our community to provide a safe environment for all, if incidents like these happen we are committed to investigating them to the fullest extent possible.”

Although Mr. Ghulam and the victim are associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, investigators could not confirm the motive behind the stabbing. The suspect has been held in jail since his arrest and will be sentenced in the near future. The New Westminster Police Department would like to thank the Major Crime Unit, Forensic Identification Unit, and our policing partners across the region for their work in this investigation.
