NWPD officers arrest man after retail store clerk punched in the face

New Westminster – On August 29th at approximately 5:00 pm, the New Westminster Police Department received a 9-1-1 call about a robbery in progress. A man allegedly entered the store, and punched a sales clerk in the face before leaving without paying for his merchandise. Witnesses pointed NWPD officers to a bank vestibule where the suspect was believed to be. Officers identified themselves from outside the bank vestibule and provided instructions to the suspect so he could be safely taken into custody. The suspect threatened the officers, and made racist comments towards them. Officers deployed OC pepper spray before arresting the suspect.

“I want to say to all the front line customer services workers in the city that we see how hard you’re working and you deserve to be treated with dignity and respect,” stated Sergeant Sanjay Kumar. “Furthermore, racist comments directed at our officers, or anyone in the community, are completely unacceptable.”
