New Westminster – On July 24th at approximately 8:00 am the New Westminster Police Department received a report that a man could be seen from the pier in the fast-moving waters of the Fraser River clinging onto a wood piling.
Patrol officers rushed to the scene and observed the man in the water struggling to hold onto the wood piling. Officers boarded Shaw 1, the NWPD police boat, and navigated as close as they could to the man in distress. Three officers pulled the man into the safety of the police boat and he was transported to the pier where BC Ambulance and New Westminster Fire and Rescue Services were waiting to offer assistance.
“The man was transported to the hospital with minor injuries,” stated Sergeant Kumar. “We want to express our gratitude to the citizens who saw he needed help and called 9-1-1. Thanks to their quick thinking and the work of patrol officers, this gentleman is now recovering in the care of his family.”
Officers will continue to investigate how the man ended in the river, but there is no foul play suspected.
