Charges approved in Hamilton Street shooting investigation

New Westminster – On May 12th 2020 at approximately 1:50 am the New Westminster Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at a house in the area of 20th Street and Hamilton Street, New Westminster. The residents were home at the time of the shooting, but confirm that no one was injured. The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arriving.

The Major Crime Unit took conduct of this investigation and shortly thereafter a suspect was arrested. 42 year old Fabian Thorpe has now been charged with the following offences:

Unlawfully discharging a firearm, contrary to Sec 244.2(3) of the Criminal Code of Canada;

Use of firearm while committing indictable offence, contrary to Sec 85(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada;

Careless use of a firearm, contrary to Sec 86(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada;

Possession of firearm knowing possession was unauthorized, contrary to Section 92(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada;

Unauthorized possession of firearm, contrary to Sec 91(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada; and

Mischief to Property over $5000, contrary to section 430(3) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

“This kind of violence is extremely traumatic, and should have no place in our community,” stated Sergeant Sanjay Kumar. “Our Victim Assistance Unit is working with the residents of the home to ensure they have ongoing support and services as this matter progresses through the court process.”

This incident is not connected to the lower mainland gang conflict.
