NWPD officers use less-lethal weapon to arrest suspect near River Market

New Westminster – On February 21st at approximately 11:45am a male was observed by a New Westminster Police Department officer in the area of 8th Street and Columbia Street displaying assaultive and threatening behavior.

The officer who observed this behavior called for backup while maintaining visual contact with the male. When additional officers arrived the male produced a weapon.

Officers attempted to deescalate through verbal commands which were not effective, and the male remained non-compliant. An NWPD officer deployed a conductive energy weapon which was ineffective. Ultimately, an officer deployed a less-lethal extended range impact weapon which allowed officers to safely approach and arrest the male.

The male received minor injuries and is being treated at a local hospital. The male remains in police custody. This investigation is ongoing and charges of assault are being considered. There is currently no risk to the public.
