Increase of Theft from Autos in New Westminster

New Westminster – The New Westminster Police would like to remind the public to lock their car doors, and remove valuables from their vehicles, after receiving several reports of theft from vehicles.

Since the start of 2019, New Westminster has received 39 theft from vehicle reports city-wide, 13 of which are from the east side.

The east side of New Westminster, specifically the area between Hospital Street to East 8th Avenue and between Richmond Street and East Columbia Street, has had several auto thefts and recovered stolen vehicles. Three of the stolen vehicles have been from secure underground parking lots in the Sapperton area.

“We want to remind the public to lock their car doors and remove any valuables from their vehicles,” stated Sergeant Jeff Scott. “When you enter a secure underground parking lot make sure that no one follows you in, and if you notice any suspicious people walking in your parking garage, call the police.”

A suspicious person can be described as someone looking into vehicles, someone wearing gloves and trying door handles of cars, or someone who you don’t recognize from your building walking around the parking garage.

Help us stop auto theft and theft from autos: lock your doors, remove valuables, don’t let anyone follow you into an underground parking lot, and report suspicious activity.
