Constable Wlodyka shares NWPD and Fraser Health collaboration at mental health course in Uganda

New Westminster – Constable Wlodyka of the New Westminster Police Department Mental Health Unit presented to other mental health professionals as part of a course held in partnership with the United Nations, Fordham University, and International Medical Corps in Kampala, Uganda.

Constable Wlodyka presented to the group on the existing collaboration between NWPD and Fraser Health with respect to supporting people with mental health needs in New Westminster. Since its creation in 2013, the NWPD Mental Health Unit works closely with numerous community partners to develop strategies to support citizens who have severe mental illness and generate excessive or high risk police contacts.

“The overarching goal of the New Westminster Police Department is to save lives, and the work that Constable Wlodyka is doing is achieving just that,” Stated Chief Constable Dave Jones. “He has fostered valuable partnerships with other mental health professionals here in New Westminster, and we’re thrilled he has been able to share that knowledge on the international stage.”

The Mental Health in Complex Emergencies course was attended by 40 participants from 25 different countries and consisted of psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. The course covered topics including severe mental disorders, case management, acute stress reactions, psychological first aid, and grief.

“Feel incredibly fortunate for the opportunity to connect and share ideas with inspirational mental health leaders from around the world,” Stated Constable Wlodyka. “I am excited to bring back some new ideas on how to better serve the community and fellow officers in New Westminster.”

Constable Wlodyka is a recent graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Masters in Counselling Psychology and was recognized in 2017 by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health for his research and dedication to the field of mental health.
