NWPD investigate several cases of “Images Depicting Child Sexual Abuse”

New Westminster – Between August 14th and September 19th, 2018 the New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit investigated six separate reports relating to the possession and distribution of images depicting child sexual abuse.

Detectives used a number of different techniques that identified three locations in New Westminster where images of child sexual abuse were being stored. Over the course of the lengthy investigation, nine different warrants were executed and three different homes were searched.

Computers, tablets, cell phones, modems, external hard drives, USB flash drives, routers, and other electronic storage devices were seized and are being forensically analyzed for their content.

“Often times offenders think that viewing these images is victimless, but the sad truth is that these are images and videos of real children being sexually abused,” stated Sergeant Jeff Scott. “Our Major Crime Unit has devoted countless hours investigating these crimes, which we take very seriously.”

One adult New Westminster man has been arrested, with charges being recommended to Crown Counsel. Several others are under investigation, which is on-going.

Anyone with information of people in possession of videos or images depicting child sexual abuse is asked to call their local police. A good resource for parents of children and youth is www.protectchildren.ca
