New Westminster Police Department launches Specialized Investigations Unit

New Westminster – The New Westminster Police Department is announcing the launch of a new unit dedicated to investigating sexual assaults.

“After a review regarding the handling of sexual assault allegations, we took a look at how we could better approach these types of files,” stated Media Relations Officer Sergeant Jeff Scott. “The result was the creation of a Specialized Investigations Unit, and we are happy to share this announcement with the community during Sexual Assault Awareness Week.”

The Specialized Investigations Unit will apply a model that has been successful in the New Westminster Police Department’s investigations of domestic violence files. In this model a specially trained detective is paired with a community counselor, to provide the best possible service to victims. This model ensures timely access to support for the victim that continues from the time of reporting the crime through to the end of the criminal process and beyond if required.

“Sexual assault is one of the most personal, invasive, and traumatic crimes a victim can suffer,” stated Detective Judy Robertson of the Specialized Investigations Unit. “We are hopeful that a dedicated unit offering a victim-centered approach will be a step in the right direction.”

The Special Investigations Unit provides assistance to people of all gender identities. Anyone wishing to contact the Specialized Investigations Unit can call 604-525-5411.
