Drug Trafficking charge approved in connection to overdose death of local teen

New Westminster – In May the New Westminster Police department shared with the public details of an overdose death of a local sixteen year old student, who had purchased MDMA from a street level dealer in New Westminster. Since that time the New Westminster Police Department Street Crime Unit conducted a lengthy and through investigation, which resulted in the arrest of a suspect and charges recommended to Crown Counsel.

On August 23, 2017, the following charge was approved against 19 year old Muhammad Taufiq Chambas:

One (1) count of Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, contrary to Section 5 (1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

“We’re pleased to see this charge approved,” stated Staff Sergeant Andrew Perry. “We know the residents of New Westminster expect that their police department will do everything they can to try to prevent these tragic incidents from occurring.”

Muhammad Taufiq Chambas’ next scheduled court appearance is September 6, 2017 in New Westminster Law Courts.
