New Westminster – On July 7th 2017, at approximately midnight a man entered the New Westminster Police Department lobby and set up camp below the reports phone.
Officers approached the man to let him know that they were making arrangements to find him a nearby place to sleep for the night as he couldn’t sleep in the lobby. As the man was picking up his bags to leave, he quickly pulled out an axe.
Constables drew their weapons and used de-escalation techniques encouraging the man to put down his weapon. The man soon placed the axe on the bench next to him, and was arrested.
42-year old Patrick Tremblay has been charged with the following offences:
1. One count of Assaulting a Police Officer, contrary to Section 270(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
“Our Constables were facing an armed man in very close quarters,” stated Chief Constable David Jones, “They were able to resolve this peacefully due to their training, teamwork, and quick decision making under very stressful conditions.”
The New Westminster Police Department would like to commend these officers for their excellent work.
