New Westminster – On July 6th, 2016 at approximately 4:00 am, NWPD patrol members responded to a call of an interrupted break and enter to a residence in the 400 block of Queens Avenue. On arrival, members located a resident who was suffering from significant but non-life threatening injuries.
The NWPD Major Crime Unit were engaged in a very active and fluid investigation throughout the day. In the early morning hours of July 7th, a male suspect was taken into custody. Stephen Smith, a 21 year old Coquitlam resident, has now been charged with the following offences:
- Breaking and entering committing an Indictable Offence – Section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
- Aggravated Assault – Section 268(2) of the Criminal Code
- Unlawful Confinement – Section 279(2) of the Criminal Code
“It is always disturbing when this kind of incident occurs, especially in someone’s home,” said Chief Constable Dave Jones “And we are very pleased we were able to have this individual in custody so quickly”.
