NWPD arrest three after robbery and pursuit

New Westminster – On March 12, 2015 at 9:00 am, the NWPD responded to a report of a robbery at the Walmart store located in the 800 block of Ewen Avenue. Staff reported three suspects had produced a weapon and ran out of the store with stolen property.

As police were en route to the scene, it was further reported the three suspects had gotten into a local area taxi and were attempting to flee. Members observed the taxi traveling eastbound in the 1400 block of Stewardson Way with the three suspects still onboard. Once police were able to get turned around, a traffic stop was attempted; however, the taxi failed to stop.

In considering the well being of the taxi driver and the fact he was possibly under some sort of duress and being forced by the three suspects to continue driving, a pursuit was initiated. The low speed pursuit continued over the Patullo Bridge into Surrey where the taxi came to a stop in the 10400 block of King George Boulevard. One of the suspects exited the taxi and was unsuccessful in his attempt to flee on foot. NWPD members caught up to the suspect after a short foot pursuit and took him into custody while the two remaining suspects who remained in the stopped taxi were also taken into custody without issue.

“Teamwork and the careful decision making of our members were key in bringing this situation to a safe resolution,” said Chief Constable Dave Jones. “The decision to initiate a pursuit is not taken lightly and in this situation, the safety of the taxi driver and the general public was of the utmost importance.”

This investigation is ongoing and the three suspects remain in custody while awaiting their next court appearance.
