New Westminster – On March 10, 2015 at approximately 5:00 pm, members of the NWPD attended the parking lot at 610 6th Street for a report of a carjacking that had just occurred at that location. The 59 year old victim, a New Westminster resident, was loading groceries into his vehicle when a male approached him with a knife and demanded the keys to his vehicle. In the interest of his own safety, the victim complied with the demand and the male drove away in the victim’s vehicle.
Within the next several hours, the stolen vehicle was involved in two incidents in Surrey. In the first, it fled the scene after rear ending another vehicle prior to police arrival. The offending vehicle was again the subject of police attention at approximately 11:45 pm in Surrey when it fled from members attempting to conduct a traffic stop on King George Boulevard near Gateway Drive.
On March 11th at 3:00 pm, the NWPD were called to the 400 block of 3rd Avenue for a report of a male slumped over the steering wheel of the same vehicle stolen in the carjacking the previous day in New Westminster. Upon arrival, members observed the male sleeping in the vehicle. Prior to the male being able to wake up, members were able to access the vehicle through an unlocked door and safely take the male into custody.
