NWPD And IIO Investigations Underway After Domestic Disturbance Call

New Westminster – On Thursday August 14, 2014, at approximately 7:00 pm, NWPD patrol officers attended a report of a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 400 block of Garrett Street. Upon arrival at the scene, the responding members located a male armed with a knife. During their interaction with this male, a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) was deployed which allowed the members to take the male into custody.

During police interaction with the male, he suffered a significant injury believed to be self inflicted, and as a result the NWPD contacted the Independent Investigations Office who attended and asserted jurisdiction.

The male in question was transported to a local area hospital where he remains for treatment of his injuries. The NWPD Major Crime Section is conducting a concurrent criminal investigation and the following charges have now been laid against Christopher Lindsey Gilkin, a 28 year old New Westminster resident:

  1. One count of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace – Section 88 (1) of the Criminal Code
  1. Two counts of disobeying a court order – Section 127 of the Criminal Code

As this matter is now before the courts, and being reviewed by the IIO, the NWPD will not be issuing further information at this time.
