25 year old auto theft suspect arrested at Burnaby-New West border

New Westminster – A hunch and some early morning patrols just across the Burnaby-New West border proved fruitful for an NWPD officer looking for stolen vehicles.

On Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at approximately 3:40 am, an NWPD patrol officer was doing a quick patrol near a problematic residence in the 7700 block of 6th street, about two blocks into Burnaby, when he located a black 1998 Volkswagen Jetta that had been reported stolen from New Westminster earlier in the evening. The member called for additional units and was able to take the lone occupant of the vehicle and into custody without incident.

Wesley Dean Rideout, a 25 year old Surrey resident, appeared in New Westminster Provincial Court on August 6th and was held in custody pending his next appearance on August 13th. He is now facing the following charges:

  1. One count of theft under $5000 – section 334(b) of the Criminal Code
  2. One count of possession of stolen property under $5000 – section 355(b) of the Criminal Code

“This is a classic example of a cross jurisdictional crime,” said Staff-Sergeant Paul Hyland. “Criminals don’t abide by police boundaries so we are actively engaged with the Burnaby RCMP in focusing on this residence and its occupants whom we believe are committing crime in both Burnaby and New Westminster.”
