NWPD to enhance enforcement during February’s Distracted Driving Campaign

New Westminster – For the month of February, the New Westminster Police Department will be increasing distracted driving enforcement around the city as part of ICBC’s Distracted Driving Campaign. Traffic Unit members and volunteers will be out all month in various locations around New Westminster looking for dangerous driving behaviours such as using hand-held electronic devices behind the wheel.

“Driving is a dangerous enough activity in itself without having any added distractions,” said Chief Constable Dave Jones. “Ninety-one people on average are killed each year in BC as a result of driver distractions. Our goal is to change driver attitudes and behaviours and as a result, save lives.”

Drivers caught using an electronic device without hands-free will be fined $167.00; drivers who are found texting or emailing while driving will be subject to 3 Driver Penalty Points in addition to the fine.
