New Westminster – On January 26, 2014 at approximately 11:20 am, members of the New Westminster Police Department were called to the 2100 block of Seventh Avenue to assist BC Ambulance and New Westminster Fire Rescue personnel with a combative patient on a medical call.
Fire and Ambulance members had earlier been called for a report of an unresponsive male on a TransLink bus who became combative when they tried to wake him. Fortunately members on scene were able to restrain the male while waiting for police arrival.
When NWPD members arrived on scene, they immediately handcuffed the combative male and a subsequent search located a loaded .40 calibre handgun in his jacket.
“This is another reminder that there is no such thing as a routine call for first responders,” said Staff Sergeant Paul Hyland. “We are very fortunate that this male was unable to access the firearm due to the quick reactions of the first responders on scene, who were there simply to provide medical attention.”
David Allen Geoghegan, a 23 year old Surrey resident, has now been charged with the following offences:
- Possession of a firearm contrary to Section 95 (1) of the Criminal Code
- Possession of a firearm while prohibited contrary to Section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code
