Surrey: On February 24, 2013 Amritpal SARAN was killed and his body was located in the 12100 block of Colebrook Road in Surrey.
New Westminster: On August 12, 2013 the body of Jill Lyons was located in her apartment in the 200 block of 11th Street in New Westminster. Less than two weeks later, on August 25, 2013, the body of Karen Nabors was found inside her apartment, which was in the same complex, as Jill Lyons.
Following the autopsies, further analysis was required to determine the cause of death but results ultimately showed that both women were the victims of foul play.
On January 3, 2014 IHIT arrested two individuals and secured murder charges in relation to both murders.
32 year old Surrey resident Sarbjit Bains is currently in custody and charges have been secured for the following:
- Two counts of First Degree Murder in connection to the homicides of Jill Lyons and Karen Nabors.
- One count of Second Degree Murder and Indignity to Human Remains in connection to the murder of Amritpal Saran.
36 year old Surrey resident, Evelina Urbaniak is currently in custody and charged with the following:
- Accessory after the Fact to Murder and Indignity to Human Remains.
Both accused attended Court this morning for their First Appearance.
A press conference was held today at RCMP EHQ Green Timbers where, along with the victim’s families, the OIC of IHIT, Supt. Kevin Hackett addressed the media. Also addressing the media was Chief Supt. Bill Fordy, Officer in charge of Surrey RCMP and New Westminster Police Chief Constable Dave Jones.
