New Westminster Police warn of phone scam

New Westminster – The NWPD have received information that members of the public may have received unsolicited calls from persons seeking cash donations for the “NWPD Anti Bullying Fund”.

It is understood that these calls originate from various numbers, usually starting with the numbers “778-785….” with a caller soliciting an amount in the $300 range and then attempting to negotiate a lesser amount if they encounter resistance.

The NWPD want to ensure that the public are aware these calls are fraudulent in nature. The NWPD does not solicit charitable donations in this manner, nor endorse any private persons or companies to do so on their behalf. Fortunately, in the cases the NWPD are aware of no money has been lost.

In addition, members of the public should be wary of this type of scam altering its tactics, such as changing the name of the police agency or charitable beneficiary to trick new victims. If such a call is received, hang up immediately and contact your local police to report the matter.
