The Public’s Assistance is Requested in Locating Missing Pieces of Valuable Native Art

On April 27th, 2013, the complainant, Jim Dutta, was at the boardwalk by the Quay when he put his bag down and walked away from it for a few minutes. When he returned, the bag, which contained very valuable pieces of native art, was missing.

The New Westminster Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in locating these items so they can be returned to their owner. Pictures are attached and descriptions of the missing items are as follows:

  • The alder beaver transformation mask (carved by Nisga’a/Haida deceased artist Wayne Young) is valued at $10,000 to $12,000.
  • The cast baton (artists Art Thompson, Richard Hunt, and George Elliot) was made for the Commonwealth Games of Victoria and is difficult to value.
  • The Three Beaver Brothers print (by Wayne Young) currently retails for $1600 at Alcheringa Gallery (Victoria).
