Emergency 9-1-1

Charges approved against former Transit Police officer

On September 12th, 2012 members of the New Westminster Police Department responded to the 500 block of 7th Street for a report of a number of people fighting outside a local bar. Upon police arrival, no one was observed fighting; however one male was taken into custody.

Shortly after the arrest, it was determined that the male was an off duty member of the South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority Police Service (Transit Police). The subsequent NWPD investigation resulted in a report to Crown Counsel being submitted.

As a result, Brian Lawson has now been charged with the following offences:

1. Assault causing bodily harm under Section 267(b) of the Criminal Code
2. Assaulting a police officer under Section 270(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

Lawson’s first appearance is set for March 6th, 2013 at New Westminster Provincial Court.

As this matter is now before the courts, the NWPD is unable to provide further comment. Media inquiries into LAWSON’s status with the Transit Police can be made with Anne DRENNAN at 604-353-1504.
