NWPD Pipe Band to attend World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland

The New Westminster Police Department is proud to announce that the New Westminster Police Pipe Band will again be attending the World Pipe Band Championships held on Glasgow Green in Scotland on August 11th.

Under the musical direction of Pipe Major Angus MacPherson and lead drummer Cam Dodson, the NWPD Pipe Band continues to be a competitive force at the Grade 2 level (the second highest  of eight levels). Currently the North American champions, this is the Pipe Band’s 7th attempt at the Worlds, having placed in the top 4 six times and never lower than 8th overall.

Other pipe bands competing at this year’s World Championships hail from such countries as Australia, New Zealand, England, Denmark, Germany, Canada, the USA, France, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and of course, Scotland itself.

This year’s competition at the Grade 2 level features a total of 15 bands in the same heat as the New West Police Pipe band and 14 in the other, with six bands advancing from each heat to compete in the finals.

Unfortunately this year, the NWPD Pipe Band’s warm up event, the Strathallan Gathering at Bridge of Allan in Scotland, may be cancelled due to the poor weather they have had recently – only the second time in 160 years that this has occurred.

We wish Angus, Cam and all the other members of the NWPD Pipe Band a safe trip and the very best of luck as they pursue the World Championship; we are extremely proud of them and their accomplishments.
