At approximately 0900 hours members of the New Westminster Police Department responded to a report of a tugboat in distress on the Fraser River in the area of the Patullo Bridge.
In addition to a number of private vessels already on the river, members of the NWPD, the Surrey RCMP, and the Coast Guard Hovercraft responded to the area and confirmed that a tugboat towing a barge had sunk. Both crew members from the tugboat have been rescued, with one being transported to a local area hospital for treatment of undetermined injuries.
NWPD, Air 1 and Coast Guard members remain on scene until the appropriate agencies are contacted to conduct their investigation.
