On March 2, 2012, several New Westminster Police Officers and the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team responded to the New Westminster Senior Secondary School after receiving a complaint of a student who had made comments to other students about possibly having a gun. The New Westminster Police Major Crime Unit conducted an investigation that has resulted in a 14 year old youth being charged with three counts of uttering threats. The youth is currently still in custody but is expected to be released into the care of his parents in the near future.
The investigation is continuing and police are working to better understand the motive behind the threats. The New Westminster Police Department advises the citizens of New Westminster and students who attend New Westminster schools that threats are taken very seriously and police will respond accordingly to ensure the safety of students, faculty staff and the public.
