Liquor Store Robbery Suspect Arrested

On August 24th at 1530 hours, the New Westminster police were summoned to the government agency liquor store located in the 800 block of McBride blvd. regarding a robbery that had occurred moments earlier. Witnesses advised that a male suspect began to walk out of the store carrying two bottles of liquor, when directed by store staff to return to the cashier to pay for the items the suspect pulled a large knife from his pocket and pointed it in the direction of staff and nearby customers.

Store staff and customers wisely backed off as the suspect fled the store. Witnesses also advised that the suspect met up with another male suspect just outside the store and both males ran from the area. Police officers attended the scene and cordoned off the area. Within minutes, patrol supervisor Acting Sergeant Gulliver observed a male matching the description of the main suspect walking down along a sidewalk approximately three blocks from the crime scene. It was also noted that the male was holding a bulky black T-shirt in his hands.

The suspect then noticed the marked police vehicle and ran towards residential housing in an attempt to avoid arrest. However, much to the suspects chagrin, he was located by Sergeant Gulliver hiding at the rear of a residence. The accused was arrested without incident. The black T-shirt was located nearby, wrapped around two rum liquor bottles.

Charged with robbery and weapons offences is a 19 year old New Westminster resident. Witness interviews and video surveillance tape is under review to identify the second male suspect.
