Police Roadblock Nets Cash Seizure

The New Westminster police have stepped up their Counter Attack roadblocks throughout the month of July. As is usually the case, police roadblocks go beyond the regular checks for impaired drivers. Case in point, on July 3rd at 2315 hours several officers were conducting roadblocks in the 100 block of East Columbia street when an officer observed a vehicle perform a u-turn to avoid the roadblock.

Officers immediately drove toward the offending vehicle and the vehicle stopped without incident. Upon speaking with the driver officers noted the odor of marihuana emanating from inside the vehicle. Officers conducted a search of the vehicle for narcotics. Narcotics were not found inside the vehicle however, officers did locate two plastic baggies in the center console containing in excess of $29,000 cash.

The driver advised that although he is unemployed he has been collecting soda pop cans and as a result has disposable cash at hand. The driver is a 30 year old Coquitlam resident and was released at scene by officers. The cash however was seized and officers are now investigating the funds as part of a proceeds of crime investigation.
