Emergency 9-1-1

Report Of Male With A Rifle Generates ERT Response

On June 3rd, 2009 at approximately 1450 hours, members of the NWPS responded to a report of a male pointing a rifle out of a 5th floor apartment building in the 600 block of Victoria Street, New Westminster, BC.

As a result of this information the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team was contacted to respond. The apartment in was contained and a male and a female occupant were taken into custody. The subsequent investigation located a pellet rifle and a pellet handgun, both of which were seized by police. The investigation into this matter continues.

The NWPS would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that replica or look-a-like firearms are extremely dangerous if not handled in an appropriate manner. Members of the public or the police often cannot differentiate between a real or replica firearm without a close-up inspection in a controlled setting.

It is strongly recommended that members of the public in possession of replica firearms handle them as if they were real firearms, and only in controlled situations where they are designed for use (paintball games etc). In the absence of information confirming an item is a replica firearm, responding police members are left with little choice but to handle the situation as if the item was a real firearm, the results of which could be very tragic for all involved.
