New Westminster – For his exemplary contributions and dedicated years of service, New Westminster Police Department Chief Paul Hyland has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Police Forces.
The Order of Merit of the Police Forces was created in 2000, to recognize conspicuous merit and exceptional service by members and employees of Canadian police forces whose contributions extend beyond protection of the community. Three levels of membership with post-nominal letters reflect long-term, outstanding service: Commander (C.O.M.), Officer (O.O.M.) and Member (M.O.M.).
“I’m proud to see Chief Hyland recognized on the national stage for a lifetime of service and leadership,” said Police Board Chair Tasha Henderson. “Throughout his career, Chief Hyland has demonstrated a commitment marked by courage, integrity, and an unwavering focus on community.”
“To be appointed as a member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces is an honour,” said Chief Constable Hyland. “I share this recognition with all those who have mentored, supported, and served alongside me throughout my career.”
Chief Constable Paul Hyland joined the New Westminster Police Department in November of 1995. As a constable, he worked in a variety of positions including Patrol, the Street Crime Unit, the Emergency Response Team and the Major Crime Unit. First promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2007, he worked as both a Patrol and Major Crime Unit supervisor. In 2008 he was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant where he again worked in Patrol, the Major Crime Unit, and later oversaw Human Resources, Staff Development, Recruiting and Strategic Communications.
In 2014 he was promoted to the rank of inspector and where he lead the Patrol Operations, Support Services, and Administration Divisions during his tenure. He was placed in the acting Deputy Chief role in April of 2019 and confirmed in the rank in 2020. Holding a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Studies, he has also taken Executive Management Training in Leadership, Public Sector Management and Strategy from the Smith School of Business at Queens University.
During his career, he has received a number of awards and commendations, including the BC award of Valor for his role in the apprehension of an armed suspect after an officer involved shooting in 2003. Chief Hyland was appointed into his current role in January 2025 where he continues to serve.
