Police Arrest Suspect Considered Armed and Dangerous – Update to May 18th Incident

New Westminster – Previously on May 18th New Westminster Police attended a complaint of two people sleeping in a vehicle in the 100 block of Royal Avenue. As the officer made contact with a male driver, the suspect pointed a firearm directly at the officer and pulled the trigger however the firearm failed to discharge. A pursuit followed spanning and police eventually lost sight of the suspect vehicle in Vancouver. Later in the day Vancouver Police recovered the vehicle.

As a result of a comprehensive and thorough investigation by the New Westminster Police Major Crime Unit, two suspects were identified and their information placed on CPIC. Sometime in the early morning hours of May 24th, the suspects were stopped and arrested without incident in Camrose, Alberta by the RCMP.

We accept that as police officers, we are sometimes exposed to potentially deadly situations we have little control over. The incident on May 18th was such a situation but thankfully our officers were not injured. Knowing that these two individuals not only posed a threat to other police personnel but also to the public at large, we embarked on high priority investigation and were able to identify these two suspects and broadcast their information to other law enforcement agencies resulting in their quick apprehension. “This is not only a great example of the professional response from our front line officers, but also a testament of the dedication and excellent work of our major crime investigators” stated Chief Constable Jones.

Further information concerning the suspect’s identity and potential criminal charges will be released at a later date.
