CRIME. It is a word we all know. We see the results of a crime in the daily news. We may also see the victims of crime and feel their suffering, their anger, their confusion and their frustration.

In New Westminster, the following services are available:

  • Crisis intervention and emotional support following a crime or tragedy 24-hours a day
  • Liaison with police, courts and other agencies to help negotiate the justice system
  • Referral to other community based agencies, where appropriate
  • Assistance with Crime Victim Assistance applications
  • Crime prevention information and free residential security checks
  • Provide assistance for evacuees involved in a community disaster

Many victims in New Westminster are referred to the Victim Assistance Unit by the police. However, self-referrals and referrals from other agencies are accepted. Assistance is also provided to victims who do not wish the crime to be reported to the police.

There are two Units operating under the New Westminster Police Service Victim Assistance Unit:

1. MOBILE CRISIS INTERVENTION UNIT

The New Westminster Police Service Victim Assistance Unit trains its volunteer victim support workers to provide emotional support, information, practical assistance and referrals to community resources for all victims of crime and their families. The Unit is available 24-hours a day, seven days per week. Referrals come from police and community agencies. Individuals requesting assistance can contact the service directly.

2. EMERGENCY SOCIAL SERVICES UNIT

These volunteers are trained specifically in disaster response. They are trained to plan and provide care for evacuees and emergency response workers who are involved in a community disaster such as a flood, toxic spill, fire or earthquake.

Community volunteers are needed for both these services.  Please contact the Victim Assistance Unit at 604-529-2525 or Click here to download a complete information and application package.

  • Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  • Ability to obtain and maintain departmental security clearance

  • Must be 20 years or older
