Stolen Auto Recovery Program

Sponsored by the Police Service and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC), Citizens' Crime Watch Patrol (CCWP) and Crime Prevention Section volunteers have access to hand-held  and laptop computers for a unique purpose. These computers contain an electronic "hotsheet" of vehicles of interest to the police (stolen vehicles, stolen licence plates or vehicles associated to criminals). Vehicle licence plate numbers may be typed into the computers and a match, or "hit", will indicate that the vehicle is possibly stolen.

The electronic hotsheet for stolen vehicles, etc., is updated weekly and is downloaded to the computers from a British Columbia wide database.

In 2001, New Westminster Police Service Volunteers recovered approximately 75 vehicles! In all cases, the Police were contacted and two arrests were made.

Why is this program so great? Speedy recovery of stolen autos result in lower costs to the victim and/or insurance company. Stolen vehicles left to deteriorate at the roadside may again be stolen or further vandalized!!

A recent study by I.C.B.C. reveals that early recovery of stolen autos through the S.A.R. program has saved $426,000.00 so far this year. That is an average savings of $315.00 per vehicle recovered.

Stolen vehicles are also 200 times more likely to be involved in a crime or a motor vehicle accident.

We make it much too easy for the crooks to steal our vehicles.

Who's at risk? The number one stolen vehicle in B.C.:

The Dodge CARAVAN or its Corporate twin the Plymouth Voyageur.

Hey everyone, stop making it so easy; use an anti-theft device. Devices that lock onto your steering wheel reduce vehicle thefts by more than 90%, at a cost of about $50.

That is the Crime Prevention Office top tip for keeping your car in your driveway where it belongs.
