Month End Report
Impaired Driving
Police observed a dirt bike, with 2 occupants driving N/B on 6th St without a headlight. The driver failed to stop for police and was subsequently located in the 1000 block of St. Andrews St. The male driver was taken into custody, arrested for resisting arrest and detained for impaired driving. The driver was transported to NW Cells for processing and to obtain a further breath sample. The driver, a 41 year old Burnaby resident, was subsequently released with the following conditions/paperwork: Notice of Impoundment for 7 days, Administrative Driving Prohibition for 90 days, Violation Ticket x 2 (Fail to Stop, No Driver's License), 24 hour Roadside Prohibition, and released on a Federal Appearance Notice for Obstruction.
Robbery
A male suspect entered the BMO, in the unit block of 10th Street, and passed a note indicating it was a robbery. No weapon was shown but it was indicated. The suspect stole cash and then fled on foot. Investigation including surveillance video identified the suspect. Also recovered was the suspects jacket which he discarded during flight. Located in that jacket was his birth certificate and the robbery note used during the commission of the crime. The accused was later located and arrested and held for court. A 34 year old New Westminster resident is charged with Robbery.
Robbery
A male entered a pharmacy, produced a gun and asked for Percocet. The suspect was partially disguised and was not initially identified. This offence was similar to other robberies in other police jurisdictions in the lower mainland. The Vancouver Police and the Burnaby RCMP identified the suspect and arrested him at his New Westminster residence. The accused has since been released by the courts and is bound by a number of recognizance conditions.
Break and Enter/ Breach of Probation
While on routine patrol in the area of 10th and Agnes, a police officer noted the front glass door of the doctors office at 75 10th Street , smashed out. While investigating this, he observed a male exiting the business. The suspect failed to comply with police commands and was pursued on foot until the suspect attempted to gain entry to a waiting taxi cab, at which time he was arrested. Cover officers arrived on scene and arrested a second male waiting in the taxi with the stolen property (2 computer monitors and a 40" TV.) The taxi driver confirmed he drove the suspects to the location and they returned shortly thereafter and loaded the property into his taxi. A witness observed one male shatter the door to gain entry.The suspects both have extensive criminal records including several B/E convictions. In addition both were on probation for B/E with no tool conditions which resulted in additional charges. Both suspects were held in custody pending court.
2 Pedestrian Hit and Run Motor Vehicle Incidents
D Watch responded to two night shift pedestrian involved Hit and Run Motor Vehicle Incidents, within an hour of each other. The incidents were found not to be related and serious injuries were not a factor in either though both victims did attend the Royal Columbian Hospital. Both scenes were contained and protected for collision reconstruction investigation which was conducted by the C.A.R.T. and Forensic Identification Sections. While one of the cases remains unsolved, the other has resulted in the arrest and recommendation of the charge of Failing To Remain At The Scene Of An Accident against a 20 year old male.
Operational Support Unit
The OSU members continued to perform high-visibility mobile and foot patrols, street checks, and nuisance by-law enforcement throughout the city, with particular attention to the uptown areas, and Simcoe Park.
The OSU members continued to review all Theft from Auto files as part of a strategy to ensure any patterns or possible suspects may be quickly identified and apprehended. 2 suspects were identified and numerous charges were forwarded after a spree of Theft From Autos that occurred in numerous underground parkades.
The OSU members continued to assist the local Probation Office by performing curfew/address checks on their clients and other clients residing in New Westminster. Numerous checks were performed throughout the month.
OSU members assisted the patrol watches with their call loads during busy time periods and significant incidents.
