Attempt Robbery
Police received a 911 call from a business owner in the Braid Industrial area stating he had just been robbed at gunpoint by two males. The business is a wood-working shop and the males burst in, and ordered him to the ground where they zap-strapped his hands and legs and demanded to know where the "stuff" was. The suspects searched quickly in his shop, returning to demand to be told where the stuff was and the cash, which the owner replied he had no idea what they were looking for. The suspects then fled out the front doors and the owner was able to free himself with a box knife and call police. File assigned to the Major Crime Unit.


Suspicious Circumstances
Police responded to a report of a possible abduction call at 6th Street and 6th avenue. Several witnesses had observed a person being forced into a Toyota SUV which fled the scene. The vehicle was located a block away and stopped. It was quickly determined that the "victim" was an intoxicated teenager who had been located by his irate grandmother. The Grandmother grabbed the youth by the scruff of the neck and put him into the vehicle to take him home.


Possession of Break In Tools
A police officer on routine patrol noted a suspicious vehicle with Alberta licence plates. It was determined that the vehicle was related to break and enter suspects out of Edmonton, particularly related to "hole in the wall " break ins , similar to an overnight business break and entry in New West. As such the vehicle was stopped and a black safe was located in the rear of the vehicle. A further search of the vehicle located, bear spray, a realistic looking pellet gun, balaclavas, walkie talkies, tow ropes, and assorted clothing. A male and a female were taking into custody. The male suspect had numerous warrants from Alberta for Break and enter and other charges and was held in custody pending transport back to Alberta. In addition follow up investigation related the suspects and the property to several break and enters in the Chilliwack/Fraser Valley area in the days prior to this stop.


Missing Children
Vancouver police reported a 12 year old girl and her 5 year old brother missing from a Canadian Tire parking lot in Vancouver. This missing report was broadcast to local radio stations. After 11 p.m. New West police received complaints of a female yelling for help in the area of the old BC Penitentiary site. Members attended and couldn't find anything although they could hear yelling believed to be in the area of Sapperton Landing which is where the missing children were located. Arrangements were made for their return home. According to the missing female she wanted to go see a friend so she purposely left the Canadian Tire but her 5 year old brother followed her. They took Skytrain and ended up at Sapperton Station and went to Sapperton Landing.


Theft Under/Robbery - Craigslist
New Westminster Police received a call regarding a theft relating to a purchase of PS3. The suspect offered to sell a PS3 on craigslist. The victim attended the suspects residence and received an "empty box" in exchange for the payment. Police responded and the suspect was arrested for theft and transported back to the station. Through the investigation, the suspect was also charged for an outstanding robbery. This suspect was subsequently charged and held in custody.


Arrests made for personal Robbery
Just after midnight a twenty-year-old female exchange student who exited SkyTrain at the 22nd Street and was about to walk the rest of the way home. Once outside the station she was approached by a female youth who asked her for the time.

The victim provided the girl with the time and as she turned to walk away, the female suspect asked her for a cigarette. The victim advised that she did not have any and continued to walk away. The victim states the young woman then stated "Well, let's make this easy, just give me the iPod." At this time the female suspect grabbed the victim's cellular phone and her iPod.

The victim resisted and a struggle ensued. Within moments a male accomplice joined the female suspect and the two of them were able to wrestle the victims' cellphone, iPod, and her purse away from her. A second female suspect was a short distance away and all three fled on foot.

Several minutes later, Constable Wright observed two well-known female Young Offenders in the 800 block of 20th Street. Both were noted to be out of breath and when detained, they were found to be in possession of the victims' purse. The male suspect was not located, however, an area search by members eventually discovered the contents of the victims purse strewn along a path leading from the point of the attack to where the two females were detained.

Charges of Robbery have been recommended against the two Young Offenders.

Homicide (NWPS file: 2010 – 6006)
On April 9, 2010, 68 year old Vancouver resident Patrick LeBlanc was found murdered in New Westminster. This investigation occupied significant major crime resources for a two week period. Major Crime Unit, in conjunction with Special Crime Unit, Operational Support Unit , Forensic Identification and Patrol, assisted the Integrated Homicide Unit with interviews, neighbourhood canvassing, profiling of witnesses and potential suspects, along with other tasks. Specific details of the investigation will not be disclosed at this time.


Robbery (NWPS file: 2010 - 6009)
On April 9, 2010, Members attended a robbery in the 400 block of Canfor Street after a male victim called to report two male suspects entered his warehouse brandishing handguns and tied him up. The suspects asked for the location of the money they believed to be there. The suspects pushed the victim to the ground and kicked him multiple times, before tying him up. The motive behind the robbery is not yet known, but it may be a case of a wrong address. Major Crime Unit Detectives have been assigned to follow up on this investigation.


Assist New Westminster Fire Department – Douglas Paints (NWPD file: 2010-6110)
On April 10, 2010, police were dispatched to Douglas Paint located at 68 6th Street to assist the fire department with a fire occurring at that location. Upon arrival, the building was completely engulfed. NWFD and NWPD Detectives have met and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Both agencies will continue to liaise and if further Police involvement is required MCU will take conduct of the file.


Drive by shooting (NWPD file: 2010 – 6116)
On April 10, 2010, several shots were fired at a business in the 800 block of Boyd Street. Fourteen witnesses were interviewed but the interviews did not reveal any information that has identified any suspects. FIS was called to the scene to seize several casings from the area. The video seized from the scene shows multiple shooters. This is an active investigation.
