On May 4, 2009 at 0250 hours residents in the 800 block of 12th street contacted the New Westminster Police Service to advise of awakening to the sound of breaking glass at a nearby business. Patrol officers were immediately dispatched to the area. The witnesses remained on the 9-1-1 line with police dispatch and were able to provide updated information as they observed it. Four suspects, of no description, were observed entering a moving van styled truck parked directly adjacent to the victim business. The vehicle fled the scene just before patrol units arrived. However, patrol officer Cst. J. Hooker soon located the vehicle as it crossed 10th avenue into Burnaby. Cst. Hooker was working in plainclothes detail and operating an unmarked police vehicle as he followed the suspect vehicle for several blocks. As Cst. Hooker radioed his position requesting assisting units the vehicle came to abrupt halt and the suspects bailed out. Cst. Hooker managed to take the suspect driver into custody before he could escape . The other suspects are still being sought. Inside the vehicle police discovered a variety of household and business items associated to thefts from various lower mainland locations. Many of the items had price tags attached to the merchandise. Arrested and held in custody is a 46 year old Squamish resident. The accused is to appear in court today on recommended charges that include; break enter and theft, possession of housebreak instruments, breach of recognizance, and possession of stolen property. The New Westminster Police request that should anyone have information regarding this theft please contact the police service immediately. |
