New Westminster – In maintaining our commitment to public trust and transparency, the NWPD want to acknowledge that one of our newest officers has been suspended from duty after being criminally charged in a domestic violence incident.
The officer in question, who had approximately three years’ prior experience with another police agency, was recently hired and sworn in as member of the NWPD. On Thursday September 4, 2014, prior to him having worked any shifts in New Westminster, the NWPD became aware that this officer had been arrested by the Vancouver Police Department in relation to a domestic violence incident that occurred earlier that day. Upon receipt of this news, Chief Constable Dave Jones immediately alerted the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner and suspended the officer pending the receipt of further information about the VPD investigation.
On Thursday, September 11, 2014, David Te was due to appear in Vancouver Provincial Court, charged with the following criminal offences:
1. One count of Assault – Section 266 of the Criminal Code
2. One count of Mischief – Section 430 of the Criminal Code
3. One count of Uttering Threats – 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code
The NWPD assures the public that we take issues of domestic violence extremely seriously, and while this individual is entitled to due process and a presumption of innocence, we are extremely disappointed that an officer we had only recently hired was arrested and is now facing criminal charges in such an incident.
This officer’s continued status under both the Police Act process and as a “probationary constable” is under review by the NWPD. At this time the NWPD will not be in a position to provide further information as this matter is before the courts.
