On Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at approximately 2:40 am, NWPD patrol officers located a blue Volkswagen Jetta that had been reported as stolen out of Langley several days earlier. The vehicle was followed without emergency equipment being activated in an effort to prevent a high speed vehicle pursuit.
The vehicle was followed as it drove over the Patullo Bridge where a spike belt was successfully deployed by NWPD members, deflating two of the vehicle’s tires. The vehicle then attempted to evade police however the damage to its tires prevented it from doing so. Shortly after crossing the Patullo, the vehicle drove into a shallow ditch in the area of 132nd Street and 112B Avenue in Surrey, at which time the lone occupant was taken into custody without further incident.
Phyllis Louise Clark, a 37 year old Burnaby resident, is now facing the following charges:
- Possession of Stolen Property over $5000 – section 355(a) Criminal Code.
- Flight from a Police Officer – Section 249.1 (1) of the Criminal Code
- Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle – section 249 (1) of the Criminal Code
- Driving while Disqualified – Section 259(4) of the Criminal Code
- Possession of a Controlled Substance – Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
“Dealing with stolen vehicles can be a very high risk activity,” said Staff-Sergeant Paul Hyland. “We are pleased that this incident was brought to a safe conclusion by our members, who were able to disable the vehicle and take the suspect into custody while minimizing the risk to the public, the police and the suspect herself.”
