The New Westminster Police Service Volunteer
Bicycle Patrol Program exists with one main focus, to reduce auto crime activity
within our city.
While riding throughout the city, volunteers are asked to give out brochures,
reminder notices to vehicles, and speak to the public about auto crime.
During the course of their duties, the volunteers act as ambassadors for the
City of New Westminster and the Police Service.
The Volunteer Bicycle Patrol Program, like
our Citizens Crime Watch Patrol Program, are not expected nor permitted,
to get directly involved in any situation but instead act as 'eyes and ears'
and report all suspicious, nuisance, and criminal behaviour to the New Westminster
Police Service.
The New Westminster Volunteer Bicycle Patrol Program is, in fact, a community
program. It is aimed at educating the local public about auto crime
activity whilst acting as a crime deterrent during rides through local neighbourhoods.
One of the most important elements of this program is that it serves to alleviate
the unreasonable fear of crime that affects our citizens.
