FITNESS COORDINATOR

The New Westminster Police Service seeks a contract Fitness Coordinator to deliver health, wellness and fitness services and instruction to police members and civilian staff.  NWPS is a progressive, dynamic and diverse organization.  The fitness coordinator can either be on an individualized service contract with the NWPS or an employee of a fitness company, which in turn contracts with the Police Service.
 
Terms of reference and required qualifications include:
  • Minimum three years of experience in the industry
  • Minimum two million dollars in insurance coverage
  • Flexible work hours to an average of 16 hours per week; some evening and weekend work may be anticipated
  • Certifications preferred: 
    • BCRPA,
    • Can-Fit-Pro,
    • NSCA-CPT or CSCS,
    • NASM personal training, or ACSM exercise specialist
    • Group fitness certification also desirable
    • CPR, First Aid and AED required
  • Ability to instruct a minimum of three fitness classes per week, including core strength, aerobic fitness, and   upper/lower body strength building.  In addition, a certification in Yoga and/or Pilates would be an asset
  • Ability to assist/train employees in back to work strategies after injury
  • Ability to teach ball, balance training, kick box, circuit / boot camp training, an asset
  • A university degree in Kinesiology, or equivalent preferred
  • Ability to assist employees to develop individualized nutrition and fitness programs suitable to their needs
  • Familiarity with the function and purpose of a range of fitness equipment, and the ability to offer instruction on the proper and safe use of each
  • Ability and enthusiasm to research and provide health and wellness information, including maintaining and updating a Health and Wellness notice board, distributing  hand-outs and making occasional presentations to employee work groups
  • Coordination of the annual "NWPS Two Weeks to Wellness" program, which involves identifying and booking a range of guest speakers, presenters and practitioners over a two  week period
  • Develop and coordinate dynamic, creative and educationally sound fitness programming, including, but not limited to:
    • group exercise classes,
    • personal training, and
    • health and wellness assessments
  • Ability to conduct fitness testing
  • Able to manage the maintenance of the fitness equipment
  • Ability to work professionally within the community, members and staff
  • The fitness coordinator is expected to meet with the Health and Wellness committee on a regular basis and to provide written updates and reports as may be required from time to time
  • Continuation of the contract will be based upon satisfactory performance during a six month probationary period
  • The successful applicant must be able to pass and maintain a security clearance, including a background investigation
