Child Safety and Identification

Working together WITH the community British Columbia Amber Alert

BC's AMBER Alert is a tool used by the police in certain abduction situations to assist in the search for the child and suspect.

AMBER Alert is a province-wide, innovative partnership among the province's law enforcement community, media broadcasting agencies and the public to locate abducted children.

AMBER Alert provides the public with immediate and up-to-date information about a child abduction via widespread media broadcasts and solicits the public's help for the safe and prompt return of the child. When an AMBER Alert is issued, radio and TV audiences will hear a special announcement.

It is hoped that this early warning system will not only coerce a kidnapper into releasing the child for fear of being arrested, but also deter the person from committing the crime in the first place.

Visit www.bcamberalert.ca for more information on:

Working together WITH the community Child Identification Kit

The New Westminster Police Child Identification Kit is a free tool offered to parents or guardians in New Westminster who wish to have an accurate record available in the event of an emergency, such as a missing child. The purpose of this kit is to ensure families have complete identification records of their children. The public may pick up a Child Identification Kit at the NWPS station or at most community events.

Child Safety Tips to Keep Kids Safe

Parents should talk to their children about safety on a regular basis. Ensure your children know:

  • Their full name, address, and telephone number
  • How to call for help and show them safe places where they can go in an emergency, such as a neighbour
  • Teach children not to talk to strangers. A stranger is any person they do not know
  • Police officers will always help
  • Never leave your child unattended in public areas and always accompany them to public washrooms
  • Make sure you know what your child is doing on the Internet (see Internet Safety)
  • Check all potential daycares, babysitters, or child minding services
